About this magazine
The Conflict Zones online magazine strives to contribute to the internationalization of theatre by writing about European theatre from a multi-national perspective. Our staff writers—Young Journalists on Performing Arts—are young journalists from all over Europe who write in their home countries as well as travel to various destinations across Europe where UTE activities are held. This magazine covers a wide range of topics, ranging from theatre in general, to UTE events, to relevant socio-political issues.
The magazine was launched in 2015 in the context of the Conflict Zones | Zones de Conflit programme, with the UTE (Union des Théâtres de l’Europe), a European theatre alliance, as its publisher.
About the Conflict Zones | Zones de Conflit programme
CONFLICT ZONES | ZONES DE CONFLIT IS A THREE-YEAR PROGRAMME THAT EXPLORES THE CONFLICTS THAT HAVE BEEN SHAPING EUROPEAN SOCIETY SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE GREAT WAR UP TO NOW.
Between 2014 and 2017, UTE member theatres have implemented a series of theatre productions tackling a myriad of conflicts that have been challenging Europe since the outbreak of World War I until today. Through dialogue and exchange, we connect these artistic works in order to facilitate a European common sense of awareness.
In addition to numerous productions shown in all member theatres and in the contexts of festivals and showcases, the programme is complemented by assemblies, conferences, roundtables, masterclasses, residencies, and think-tanks that all tackle the theme of conflict zones through various approaches.
Young European Witnesses—spectators, critics, actors, playwrights, directors—accompany the process of the project, while being given the opportunity of meeting each other and exchanging experiences and points of view, as well as creating together.
We believe that it is the responsibility of artists not to stay silent or isolated, and that it is their duty to reflect on the challenges and threats of humanity.
